To my fellow graduates, we wouldn’t have reached this point if it were not for our families, friends, and professors who molded us into who we are today. Because of them, all the challenges we faced made us stronger. We will ever be grateful to the Lyceum of the Philippines University Batangas, for preparing us to face real life and to be competent, committed, values-oriented individuals.

LPU focuses not only on academics but also on the enhancement of skills and talents. This is a training ground for future leaders, professionals, and beauty queens, too! Before, I just thought that I would always be on the classroom or maybe in the canteen and that would be all. I’ve prepared myself with that routine because joining organizations that enriches talents whether singing or dancing was not for me. I’m a frustrated singer and a terrible dancer so I’ve got nowhere to go until I was brought to somewhere different. I was chosen by my classmates to be the representative for our course for Ms. Freshman. At first, I was doubtful because I’ve never really joined pageants. I was like, “Can I really do this?” I never really had an idea about that thing. In relation with this, I had a little preparation for that pageant. I have to reduce the food that I eat, especially rice. This thing was the most difficult adjustment I made. I love to eat! I also need to learn how to pose and how to walk properly and all those things. I knew that I wasn’t capable and prepared enough. I felt so nervous before, during, and even after the pageant. My nerves were shaking. I even thought that I would faint because of such pressure and nervousness but I entrusted everything to God and let Him guide me. I just said that He willed it, so be it. I felt shocked when I was declared as Miss Freshman. It was not totally what I wished for. Honestly, I only hoped to be included in the top 5 and nothing more. But what happened was beyond that. It was something to be thankful of. This was one of the most memorable events that I will forever cherish as long as I live.

Gloomy as it may seem but my life had a sudden twist of fate. My life in LIMA at first was not that great. Funny as it may seem but yes, I could say that it was quite boring. As I go along counting the days that passed, many things seemed to unfold. I will never forget the moment when LIMA needed to pick a representative for LPU’s Mr. and Ms. Freshmen 2014. I was shocked when I was chosen to represent our college after the screening. What more when I was hailed as Mr. Freshman, it was indeed surreal. I won not for the reason that I am the best, but I believe I was the one who competed with full confidence guided by a gym full of supporters and personal prayers. I’ve learned so much more than I expected in that competition. Not only did it strengthen my skills in people-relation and public speaking, but I also acquired new knowledge of elegance and social graces to positively represent LIMA in public events. I not only became more involved in the university activities, but I also was able to reach out to other freshmen. Lending a hand to the student council of LIMA, seems to be a foreshadowing of things to come. It will forever be a worthwhile experience because the competition’s journey does not stop there, I am excited for the coming years as I continue to become more involved in LPU’s never ending fun activities even after my title has been passed on. It seems vague, but really every time I go back to the time when my parents and I kept on arguing about what to take up for college, it taught me the importance of – Listening. We should take a chance to listen to our parents because they know what is best for us. The best things in life are not those rare moments that are exceptional, but those everyday moments, the routine that we create and the decisions we make. And today, being part of LPU is really what I am thankful for. I never thought of finding friends inside the college but also family that will surely support me all the way. Finding the right language to describe my first year’s journey in LPU has always been a challenge for me. I suppose I’ll end with exactly what I was hoping to find – a “happy roller coaster feeling.” And will prove to everyone that forever does exist. Because I will “FOREVER” be grateful of being a Lycean. Yes, FOREVER.

But what really made LPU feel like home are the officials, teachers and staff who treated everyone like family. Yes, surviving college requires more effort than it does in high school but I know everything that I experience within the university, be it good or not so good, will help me in the future. I am very fortunate to have such dedicated professors who help us become passionate and motivated future dental practitioners. Aside from the academic programs, LPU has organizations that offer a wide range of activities to spice up one’s college life. As for me, I joined the school paper (Phoenix) and became a staff artist for one year, I also played badminton in the PISTAKASAN event and I was also able to represent my department in the university-wide debate and won as the best debater. I also had the chance of becoming a student leader as I was the president of my class since 2011 until now. I also took part in the Lyceum Supreme Student Council (A.Y. 2012-2013) and participated in numerous community extension activities. Those kinds of activities surely awakened the leader within me and ignited my desire to help other people. Moreover, I also confidently learned public speaking through hosting numerous events within the University. Aside from all those, pageants are common in LPU and I was lucky enough to experience and win some titles. I was Mr. Freshmen 2011. In my junior year I became Mr. Dentistry, and finally, Mr. LPU 2014. Responsibilities along with these titles are great and expectations of being a good role model are high but through the help and guidance of my advisers, teachers, mentors and friends, I know I was able to fulfill my duties with flying colors. I learned new things about myself, things I never thought I was capable of doing thus making me a better person.
