Top executives from the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association (NSA) visited the Lyceum International Maritime Academy (LIMA) of the Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas (LPU-B) on April 25, 2025, in a significant move to strengthen ties between the global maritime industry and Philippine maritime education.

The delegation was led by Mr. Matthew Duke, CEO of Grieg Maritime Group and President of the Bergen Shipowners’ Association. He was joined by fellow NSA executives Mr. Erik Gjerdene, Ms. Jannicke Steen, Mr. Pål Tangen, and Mr. Gjermund Eide, featuring the growing collaboration between Norwegian maritime leaders and LPU-B.

The program began with welcome remarks by Dr. Peter P. Laurel, President of LPU-B, who emphasized the importance of global partnerships in preparing cadets for the evolving demands of the maritime sector. He noted that such visits affirm LIMA’s commitment to excellence and highlight the mutual goals shared by academia and the maritime industry.

Mr. Matthew Duke delivered an inspiring message to the audience, focusing on the strategic goals of the Norwegian maritime sector, including sustainability, innovation, and resilience, highlighting how these can be integrated into maritime education at LIMA. He also addressed the challenges and changes facing the maritime industry, stressing the need for agility and adaptability in preparing the next generation of seafarers.

A formal meeting with Dr. Laurel and the LPU-B Management followed, where strategies for academic and industry collaboration were discussed. Topics included aligning training programs with international standards, incorporating shipping practices, and enhancing cadet support and career development.

One of the highlights of the visit was the engagement session with NSA cadets, where the executives interacted with students, listened to their experiences, and offered advice on navigating careers in a dynamic maritime landscape.

The visit concluded with a tour of the LIMA campus and facilities, showcasing the institution’s training equipment, simulators, and classrooms that support its vision of delivering world-class maritime education.
