On October 27, 2025, Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas (LPU-B) and the Lyceum International Maritime Academy (LIMA) spearheaded the successful deployment of artificial coral reefs in Lobo, Batangas—a collaborative effort that reflects their steadfast commitment to marine conservation and sustainable coastal development. The initiative was made possible through the partnership of Soroptimist International Downtown, led by Ms. Joann M. Marabe, and the Municipality of Lobo, under the leadership of Hon. Mayor Geronimo “Emong” C. Alfiler.

The program opened at the Lobo Municipal Hall, where project partners gathered to affirm their shared vision for environmental restoration. Discussions centered on the importance of protecting the town’s rich marine life, which sustains both local biodiversity and community livelihood. From there, participants proceeded to Brgy. Sawang to prepare and assemble the reef modules before heading to the waters off Brgy. Olo-olo for deployment.

At the reef site, divers and technical specialists oversaw the careful placement of the artificial structures on the seabed. Designed to mimic natural reef formations, these installations will serve as new habitats for marine organisms and help rehabilitate areas affected by coral degradation. The methodical process ensures that the reefs are positioned to encourage natural colonization and growth over time.

More than a single-day event, the project represents a long-term investment in marine resilience. It brings together the expertise of the academe, the initiative of civic organizations, and the leadership of local government in addressing environmental challenges through hands-on, science-based solutions. By directly engaging in fieldwork, LPU and its partners highlight the value of education that acts in the service of the community and environment.

The artificial coral reef deployment in Lobo reflects how sustained cooperation can transform environmental advocacy into measurable action. Through shared responsibility and continued stewardship, the participating institutions hope to restore balance beneath the waves and preserve the coastal ecosystem that generations of Batangueños depend upon.
