In another year of honoring the outstanding creators and public figures behind the media industry, the Golden Laurel Media Awards was held last August 4 at the Freedom Hall, SHL Building, LPU-Batangas Main Campus.
Awardees that were present in the event were Ms. Bernadette Sembrano and Ms. Jodi Sta. Maria. Lipa City Councilor Mikee Morada were also present to represent his wife Ms. Alex Gonzaga, and Batangas Vice Governor Mark Leviste for Ms. Vilma Santos-Recto.
Ms. Bernadette was hailed the Best Female News Anchor of the Year. In her humble speech, she thanked the lyceans for constantly believing in the excellence ABS-CBN has to offer. She also expressed the honor of being given the award by Batangueños, whom she also admired for their unmatched service. She also received the Best Public Service Program Show Host/s Award together with Edric Calma, and Best Public Service Program Show for Lingkod Kapamilya.
On the other hand, Ms. Jodi Sta.Maria, Best TV Drama Actress, thanked the Batangueños for their support for her drama The Broken Marriage Vow. She shared that although it was difficult to work under COVID protocols, this hard conflict made the show’s triumph sweeter. The said series also received the Best Drama Series Award. Ms. Jodi also dedicated the award to her co-stars, who she endearingly called by their characters’ names: David, Lexie, and Gio.
This year’s Best Filipino Female Vlogger is Ms. Alex Gonzaga. Her husband, Konsi Mikee received the award on her behalf, saying that it is his wife’s joy to post vlogs just for her “Netizens” to forget their problems even just for a while.
Lastly, Batangas Vice Governor Mark Leviste shared a message from Ms. Vilma Santos-Recto, this year’s Sotero H. Laurel Lifetime Achievement Award. Ate Vi highlighted the meida industry’s role in giving a spotlight on pressing issues of our society. A part of her message went as follows:
“In the movies that I made, I accepted roles that brought to public attention a wide array of problems, conflicts and complexities of women; how they courageously and intelligently handled them. In the process, these movies helped our moviegoers gain a deeper understanding of our women’s condition. They encouraged and emboldened our women, too, to learn to assume full responsibilities over their lives and situations, thus, empowering them.
I played the role of an activist in Sister Stella L, a mistress in Relasyon, a cancer victim in Pahiram ng Isang Umaga, an AIDS victim in Dolzura Cortez, and a mother of an autistic child in Ipagpatawad Mo. I did these movies despite some reservations of some people close to me, for I strongly believed in their underlying message for women: take a stand, fight for your rights, protect your dignity, take control of your life.
Nariyan din ang “Dekada ‘70”,”Bata, Bata, Paano Ka Ginawa?” at “Anak”. Sana napanood niyo ito.”
