I am Manilyn Estrella Jacobsen currently residing at the Faroe Islands a volcanic island between Iceland and Norway in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is a self-governing archipelago, part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It has a 52,000 population and about 200 Filipinos residing and working here. I was Faroe Islands’ first Filipina nurse when I moved here in 2013. The following year I applied for Danish Authorization from the Danish Health Patient authority and in 2018 I got my authorization to practice my profession as a nurse. I am so proud as a Lycean and being a graduate of an ISO accredited institution by Det Norske Veritas then helped me to obtain my authorization to practice as a nurse. They recognized the DNV logo on my LPU diploma right away which I believe got me the nod of approval.
I am the first Filipina nurse and only Filipina nurse working in the Faroe Islands until June 2020. It was the Filipino Nurses Association-Nordic (FiNan) who approached me and asked me to become the Faroe Islands nurse representative. I was indeed honored for this opportunity. As the official representative of the community of the Filipino nurses here I was also tasked to update its members about the social and healthcare services and at the same time monitor the challenges of nurses living here.
This is also why I was the one being interviewed by Bombo Radyo and the Filipino Channel of ABS CBN since the pandemic struck in this part of the world. Currently, I am working in the surgical department in the National Hospital of Faroe Islands and taking my Master’s in Health Science at the University of Faroe Islands. I am very grateful for the opportunity given to me by my fellow Filipinos and of course the training that I had from LPU which paved the way for me to become the professional that I am now. This is a true testament that anywhere in the world we should be proud that we are Lyceans! #ButiNaLangNagLyceumAko
