Norwegian Shipowners’ Association contacted Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangasβ Lyceum International Maritime Academy in January 2022 expressing their intent for LPU-B to be included among the list of NSA partner schools. For this to actualize, an initial meeting was held between NSA Officials, LPU-B President, Dr. Peter Laurel, and its management team. The actual visit to the campus, on the other hand, took place a month after. A series of audits by the NSA team have been conducted to ensure that all requirements are met including compliance with the CHED-MARINA regulations and policies. The quality standards system was also reviewed and revised specifically in the area of instruction. In addition, several faculty training and workshops were held to address and meet the NSA standards and the JCMMC.

Aside from the prestige and recognition of becoming an NSA Partner school, this will also open numerous doors and opportunities for the students. This partnership will further raise the standards of education, thus resulting in more shipping companies partnering with LPU-Batangas for the deployment of cadets. It has been proven that LIMA has the available resources and is providing beyond the minimum required standards of CHED-MARINA. In addition, NSA will also be sponsoring several scholars as part of the agreement. Both parties look forward to increasing the number of scholars in the years to come. This will be of great help to financially challenged yet academically gifted students who aspire to become maritime professionals. Moreover, they would not need to look for their companies since there will be guaranteed slots for their Onboard Training at once.
Present during the MOA signing held at the Lyceum International Maritime Academy today, June 30, 2022, were Capt. Jo Even Tomren, NSA Managing Director, Mr. Larry Gonzales, NSA Cadet Manager, Capt. Nebuchadnezzar Rabaya, NSA Training Manager, and other NSA Officials. LPU-Batangas, on the other hand, was led by its University President, Dr. Peter Laurel, Mr. Erick Badillo (SVP/ VP Finance), Dr. Cecille Pring (VPAR), and Dr. Conrad Dotong (AVPAR), Capt. Alex Gonzales (Dean, LIMA) and other LPU Officials, faculty members, and admin personnel.
This agreement between the two leaders in maritime education and industry aims to elevate the standard of maritime education and training not only in the country but also around the world. Both parties signify their commitment to ensuring quality results of the program and use the partnership to explore other areas of collaboration, particularly research. This also signals a more industry-driven maritime academic program of LPU-Batangas which concretizes the relevance of its academic offering to the demands of the industry.
LPU is positive that with this tie-up with the NSA, it will continue to produce globally competitive maritime professionals and will continue to take the lead in enhancing the maritime educational landscape in the country and the world.
