CARLO  GUALBERTO  ESPINA – RMT, MBA, MPA

BS Medical Technology, 1992

Founding President, Pioneer Clinical Laboratory & Medical Clinic, Inc.

“I have always wanted to become a “doctor”, but my father – wanted me to become an “engineer’. After I have luckily passed the PEPT from First Year High-School to First Year College, it helped me direct and pursue my path, in the most unexpected way.”

B.S. Medical Technology is the best preparatory course for Medicine. It is a fact.  From an Engineering University where I spent a year to fulfill my father’s wish, I decided to transfer to LPU-Batangas (then, Lyceum of the Philippines). I chose to be a game-changer! I was able to explore and stretch my boundaries, especially with the self-resiliency mindset – adaptation in the ’80s and ’90s.  If I didn’t become a Lycean, and eventually a Registered Medical Technologist, I would have missed the golden opportunity of connecting the dots of my passion, from expectations to reality, and to what I have humbly accomplished now. Yes, there could have been another journey perhaps; however, I am not certain if I will be this content and happy.

“DI KA MAN LANG NAGING CLASS OFFICER MULA GRADE 1, PRESIDENT KA NA PALA NGAYON!” – This joke branded the turning point in my life.  This has made me brave and continued to challenge me until now.  I used this to push myself beyond the limitations I already knew of myself.

Borrowing Charles Darwin’s – “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.”

After graduation, I have had a kaleidoscopic journey as a Registered Medical Technologist, and as a Lycean, I have kept President JP Laurel’s ideals: In “Veritas et Fortitudo” (truth and fortitude) and “Pro Deo et Patria” (for God and Country), and this kept me focused and grounded; always keeping the gratitude in my heart to God and family, while serving and looking back to my roots.

In retrospect: FIRST, believe in your God-given-purpose; SECOND, believe in yourself; and THIRD, dream BIG, big enough to motivate you, that your past life would even get jealous.
